Basketball & Yoga: A Match Made In Heaven

I’ve been working out for most of my adult life. And I’ve done it all. Every craze you can imagine from Zumba to Cross Training. I’m sure that you’ve been in the same boat. The problem with all of these fads is that you get burned out, and even the most rigorous workout becomes boring.

How the fundamentals of the game keep you in shape

Now, in my late thirties, I’ve taken up basketball. Why you ask? Well, my son took up the game, and to have more in common with him, I decided to join a league myself. What I discovered, besides a wonderful and challenging game, is that the fundamentals of the sport are a great way to stay in shape. That’s right, basketball drills provide not only a great workout, but they’re also a lot of fun.

But that’s not all I discovered! As you’ll see, it took a dare to help me learn about the other half of my new workout program. Yoga had always been a dirty word to me - Something that soccer moms, and crunchy dads did because they weren’t “real” athletes. I didn’t even believe yoga was a good way to stay in shape in spite of the lean, sexy bodies I’d noticed on yoga practitioners. Yes, I was incredibly ignorant.

I remained ignorant in spite of the fact that some mom friends of mine had begun taking yoga and were showing serious results. I would argue with them about their “workouts,” and tell them they should join me if they wanted a “real” workout.

I dare you!

Finally, it took a dare to get me to give yoga a shot, and combine basketball & yoga. One of my closest friends accused me of being afraid to try yoga, and literally dared me to attend a class with her. I’m not one to back down from a challenge, so I decided to give it a try.

I went in laughing and telling my friend what a breeze the class would be for me, and I came out humbled in every way. First of all, it was challenging. There were poses I couldn’t even attempt, let alone hold. It showed me that my sense of balance needed some serious work. It showed me that I wasn’t quite as strong or flexible as I thought I was, and it showed me that I wasn’t really in tune with my body at all. In short, it kicked my butt.

Yoga makes you lean, flexible, strong, and fit

I’ve learned that yoga makes you stronger. I’ve learned that yoga teaches stretching, strengthening, and breathing. I’ve learned that yoga is good for any sport. And best of all, I’m in tune with my body in a way I’ve never been before.

The combination of basketball & yoga has been a real revelation to me. I’m in great shape, but more importantly I’m consistently having a great time.
